Is there a place for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=00TydRGmm6U\" target=\"_blank\">heatgun<\/a> in beekeeping? That is a resounding YES. Is it good, great, or fantastic at\u00a0uncapping the honey frames? In our view, it is not. It works OK at the best of\u00a0times, and only on very specific frames, where tiny air pockets exist in between\u00a0the honey and the wax capping itself. In absence of such air pocket, the wax\u00a0did not pop open or melt at all. It simply heated the wax, heated the honey\u00a0(which is what you want to avoid if possible \u2013 although the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=00TydRGmm6U\" target=\"_blank\">hot knife<\/a> also\u00a0heats it, so the comparison is on par for both methods), and then the wax hardened\u00a0again, thus sealing the #<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mahakobees.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">raw honey<\/a> inside the cup\/cell again, never to be\u00a0extracted unless further uncapping process, such as the use of an uncapping\u00a0fork is used.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">There is a valid argument for the use of #heat gun for the\u00a0uncapping process in that it reduces the need for beeswax cappings processing.\u00a0This does take considerable time if you choose to harvest the cappings, strain them\u00a0(to reduce loss of your honey harvest), then wash, clean, melt, filter, and\u00a0refine a few times to produce a product ready for further utilisation or sale\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\">to the many <a href=\"http:\/\/mahakobees.com\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\">beeswax <\/a>dependent industries, such as cosmetics and candle making. It also leaves the frame dirty and uneven. The hot knife tends to\u00a0level the comb nicely to maintain a healthy bee space in between your frames\u00a0and the comb is nice and straight to pull in and out of the hive as required during\u00a0the hive inspections and honey harvests if done on a frame by frame basis. Then\u00a0there is the much reduced efficiency of honey extraction to take into\u00a0consideration. All <a href=\"http:\/\/mahakobees.com\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\">beekeepers <\/a>are aware of the hard labour that it takes to go\u00a0to their apiary location, open the hives, inspect, collect the frames,\u00a0transport back to the processing sheds, extracting the honey\/beeswax and by-products,\u00a0and so on. Then the trip back, re-deploy the honey supers and frames. The work\u00a0is immense. Now if you use the heat gun, the yield is almost \u00bc or more less than\u00a0it otherwise would be using the more traditional, tried and tested methods. So\u00a0yes, the honey and wax are returned to the hive, so nothing is essentially\u00a0wasted (unless you are going into winter, in which case there is a problem with\u00a0so much honey retained inside your frames, but that is a separate issue), but\u00a0all that means, is that you will have to make the next visit much sooner, and\u00a0extract on a more frequent basis as the bees will fill the frames much faster \u2013\u00a0obviously\u2026 as they are half full already.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm; text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm; text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm; text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm; text-align: justify;\">If you choose to use the uncapping fork, then the uncapping time taken\u00a0per side of the frame is about the same and the hot knife, AND THEN you have to\u00a0deal with the tiny amounts of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1iqfW_0EHVw\" target=\"_blank\">uncapped beeswax<\/a> anyway. Get all your gear\u00a0dirty, get the strainer out, get the beeswax washed, dried, processed,\u00a0filtered, and poured into molds anyway.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm; text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm; text-align: justify;\">Lastly, you don\u2019t have the by-product that can also bring in more\u00a0revenue, or save on further costs by reusing your own beeswax for foundation if\u00a0that is how you choose to assemble your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mahakobees.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">honey frames<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm; text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm; text-align: justify;\">To conclude, this little experiment was fun and interesting to do.\u00a0It was certainly exciting at first to see all the beeswax cappings just pop\u00a0almost instantaneously, and one would be forgiven for thinking they found a\u00a0holy grail in the time consuming uncapping process, BUT\u2026 once the entire process\u00a0was completed, it was clear that it was just that.
